A common question people have about undergoing a facelift procedure is whether or not it will look and feel natural. If you’re asking this same question, watch the video interview below with Dr. Randy Robinson, a highly respected and practiced cosmetic surgeon in Denver, CO:
The Face Lift Procedure: What To Expect and Effective Alternatives
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT for “Does a Face Lift Look and Feel Natural”:
So, most patients don’t want a huge, dramatic change. When you put it side by side it might be a wow. You like a “wow,” but you don’t want it to be “oh my gosh, they’ve had a face lift!”
So, we try and tailor the face lift for the age that’s appropriate for the patient. Again, reversing that age about 7 to 10 years.
During those first couple of months after their surgery, patients do feel tight. There is a tightness. They feel that tightness and over that two month period to three month period, it relaxes and it feels more natural to them. The movement and that sort of thing. If you don’t give them that level of tightness at first, then the result is not going to be as long-lasting. So, there’s a balance there in how tight you pull it, keep it looking natural, so they don’t look like they’ve been in a wind tunnel, but at the same time, get a good, long-lasting result.
So, there are some alternatives to the face lift, depending on where the patient is in their ability to have a recovery. Maybe the amount of aging is not substantial enough where they’re really ready for a facelift and I have a number of patients. I say no, you’re not ready. We need to wait.
For those patients, there is the alternative of injectables. Botox, for example, is a botulism toxin. It can be used in the wrinkles of the forehead and around the eyes, occasionally in the lips and and chin if there are certain little dimples that need to be taken care of and that can be effective in reducing those wrinkles.
Some patients require a type of injectable called a filler. One of the most popular ones now is a hexuronic acid. It’s a Juvederm. There’s some other products out there as well. They can be injected within that layer right under the skin to fill the wrinkle out.
It works very well around the mouth, into the cheek area. Certainly the lips can be augmented and made larger. So, there it’s helping, not only with the wrinkles, but some contouring issues. Those are the main two things as far as injectables are concerned.
The other option that patients have if they’re not ready for the facelift are some minor resurfacing procedures. These can be done with some mild chemical peels or some light dermabrasion, or certainly some home skin products.
